The Youth Council is a Formal Advisory group that consists of 15 young people aged 15-25 who live, work, study or play within Nillumbik. The Youth Council will be responsible for the establishment and review of a Youth Strategy and Action Plan, which sets out the priorities and actions for young people to lead with the support of Council across their two-year term.

Meet the 2022-23 Youth Council:
Joey is 20 years old and lives in Eltham. Joey joined Youth Council to create awareness in the community around BMX and to find ways to improve BMX facilities in the local community. Joey’s goal for Youth Council this year is to advocate for the improvement of current BMX facilities in Nillumbik.
Martina is 16 years old and lives in Eltham North. Martina joined Youth Council to gain experience in leadership and to contribute her ideas for the community. Martina is passionate about mobile phone addiction, social connection and sustainability. Martina’s goals for this year include gaining confidence and experience in leadership as well as actioning the Youth Strategy.
Niamh is 15 years old and lives in Eltham North. Niamh joined Youth Council to ensure the voice of all young people are heard and to bring safety and equity to all community members. Niamh is passionate about social equity, mental health and the climate crisis. Niamh’s goals for Youth Council this year include creating opportunities for a wider range of young people to have their voice heard and advocating for extra youth support systems that address mental health and accessibility.
Bailey is 16 years old and lives in Diamond Creek. Bailey joined Youth Council to provide young people with more opportunities to get involved in the community and try new things. Bailey is passionate about social connection, youth development and mental health. Bailey’s goal for Youth Council this year is to run events so young people can try new things and connect.
Orianna is 22 and lives in St. Andrews. Orianna joined Youth Council to help advocate on behalf of young people and to help make a difference in the local community. Orianna is passionate about social connection, opportunities for young people in rural areas and youth leadership. Orianna’s goals for Youth Council this year include creating more youth events for social connection in rural Nillumbik and advocating for youth mental wellbeing and employment.
Ava is 16 years old and lives in Montmorency. Ava joined Youth Council to change things in the local community. Ava is passionate about LGBTQIA+ advocacy, the environment and gender equity. Ava’s goals for Youth Council this year include advocating for projects to make young people feel more comfortable in the community such as LGBTQIA+ education, lighting projects and youth help centres.
Deputy Youth Mayor- Kirra Imbriano
Kirra is 17 years old and lives in Eltham. Kirra always wanted a platform to help make positive change in the local community and thinks Youth Council is a great place to do that. Kirra is passionate about the environment, LGBTQIA+ inclusion and Reconciliation. Kirra’s goals for Youth Council this year include utilising social media to engage with and inspire local young people as well as encouraging more young people in advocacy and leadership.
Maali is 16 years old and lives in Hurstbridge. Maali joined Youth Council to make a meaningful impact that’s beneficial to everyone within the community. Maali is passionate about the environment, social connection and equity and equality for all. Maali’s goal for Youth Council this year is to make a difference in the community alongside other Youth Council members.
Youth Mayor- Brianne Keogh
Brianne is 24 years old and lives in Plenty. Brianne joined Youth Council because she wanted to make an impact in the Shire even if it was big or small. Brianne is passionate about gender equity, preventing bullying and financial wellbeing for young people. Brianne’s goals for Youth Council this year include implementing actions on the Youth Strategy, assisting with the co-design of a Youth Hub and establishing a Women’s Leadership Program within local sporting clubs.
Maverick is 24 years old and lives in Eltham. Maverick joined Youth Council to give a voice to youth in the community, and work with young people to identify opportunities, barriers and issues impacting our youth. Maverick is passionate about mental health and safe events for young people. Maverick’s goal for Youth Council this year is to deliver more safe, inclusive and engaging events for youth to encourage participation.
Jack is 25 years old and lives in Wattle Glen. Jack joined Youth Council to help young people in the community. Jack is passionate about violence prevention, BMX and creating a Youth Hub. Jack’s goal for Youth Council this year is to continue advocating for BMX facilities and a Youth Hub for the local community.
Indi is 17 years old and lives in Eltham. Indi joined Youth Council to help make a difference in the community and to be a voice for others around her. Indi is passionate about the environment, gender equality and community safety. Indi’s goals for Youth Council this year include helping make the community a safer and happier place for all and working collaboratively with young people to create a community everyone is proud to live in.
Fieke van der Kamp
Fieke is 17 years old and lives in Diamond Creek. Fieke joined Youth Council to be the change she wants to see in the world. Fieke is passionate about climate change, mental health and combatting discrimination. Fieke’s goals for Youth Council this year include running events for young people on climate change activism and empowering young people to take action on the issues they are passionate about.
Lachlan is 20 years old and lives in Eltham. Lachlan joined Youth Council to meet new people and make change for young people in the community. Lachlan is passionate about disability advocacy, youth employment and volunteering opportunities. Lachlan’s goals for Youth Council this year include providing more programs and events for young people living with a disability and developing his public speaking skills.
Rhys is 15 years old and lives in Lower Plenty. Rhys joined Youth Council to create more opportunities for his peers to socialise in a safe and fun environment. Rhys is passionate about creating safe risk taking opportunities for young people, encouraging young people to engage with nature and preventing pollution of the Yarra River. Rhys’ goal for Youth Council this year is continuing to advocate for BMX facilities for the community.
