Youth Summit

The Nillumbik Youth Summit brings together young people from across the Shire to discuss topics and issues that are important to them. Participants then make a number of recommendations to Council, local MPs and local youth service providers on the changes and initiatives they'd like to see in the community.

The Youth Summit is by designed by our Youth Council for young people who are passionate about leadership, advocacy and the community in response to Council’s Youth Strategy 2022-2026. The Strategy provides an integrated approach to ensuring Council continues to value and incorporate young people into Council by providing meaningful opportunities for young people, valuing their contributions and empowering them to help shape our community.

In June 2026, young people from Diamond Valley College, St Helena Secondary College, Eltham High School, Parade College, Loyola College, Catholic Ladies College, Templestowe College and Montmorency Secondary College attended the Youth Summit.

The day began with a keynote presented by Lucy Thomas, CEO and founder of PROJECT ROCKIT. Lucy provided insight into their journey to establishing PROJECT ROCKIT and shared how young people can leverage their voices and skills to address the issues they care about and make a lasting impact.

Table discussions were peer facilitated by representatives of Nillumbik’s Youth Council, with each round having a different focus; making change on an individual level, providing feedback to Council on existing programs and services, and developing a recommendation to Council. Participants discussed their vision for the future of Nillumbik and the ways we can create change as a community with great insight, knowledge, and enthusiasm.

Young people finished the day by presenting their recommendations to Councillors, Council Officers, and local service providers.
