Help create a healthier, greener home for one of our most unique local species — the platypus!

Are you aged 12–18 and keen to make a real difference in your local environment? Join us for a hands-on planting day along Diamond Creek, where you’ll help restore native habitat and improve conditions for wildlife, including our shy creek‑dwelling platypus.

Get your hands dirty, spend time outdoors, and connect with others who care about the environment. Whether you come with friends or on your own, you’ll be part of a fun and active day working together to restore nature — one plant at a time.

We will meet at Nillumbik Youth Hub, Diamond Creek. The day will begin at the Youth Hub, followed by a short walk to a nearby creek‑side planting site. Participants will be guided through hands-on planting activities by Council’s Environment and Edendale Environment Youth teams, with all tools and materials provided.

We will return to the Hub for a break and lunch before wrapping up the day.

What to Bring

  • Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

  • Enclosed shoes suitable for outdoor work

  • A drink bottle

  • Gloves (optional – some will be available)

Lunch
A free pizza lunch will be provided at approximately 12:30pm. Please advise of any dietary requirements when registering.

Participation
Participants are encouraged to attend the full session to get the most out of the experience. If you need to arrive later or leave early, please let us know in advance when registering so we can support your participation.

Accessibility & Inclusion
This is an inclusive and welcoming activity for young people of all backgrounds, genders, and identities. We encourage participants of all abilities and offer flexible ways to take part, including lighter tasks and rest breaks as needed.
The activity will take place on uneven, outdoor terrain near the creek. If you have access, mobility, sensory, medical, or other support needs—or would like to discuss how we can support your participation—please contact: environment@nillumbik.vic.gov.au

This program is fully supervised by Nillumbik Youth Staff, and is alcohol, drug, smoke and vape free. To protect the privacy of young people, photography and videography is not permitted at this activity. To support a comfortable environment, we ask that parents wait offsite during the session. Young people are welcome to attend alongside their carer (carers will just need to attend with a Victorian Working With Children Check).
