This page is full of resources and support services for young careers who support a parent, grandparent, guardian, sibling or friend who might live with a disability, mental illness or other challenges. Helping look after a friend or family member is a big responsibility, so it’s important that you get te support you need. 

 

Information and Support Resources

Carer Getaway

Carer Getaway is a great place to start the website has lots of practical information and resources for carers, from resources and networks through to your carer financial support options.

Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centres (CRCCs) can help you to organise respite care so that you can take a break from your responsibilities. Contact your nearest CRCC by phoning 1800 052 222 during business hours or 1800 059 059 for emergency respite support outside standard business hours.

Carers Victoria

Carers Victoria is the state-wide voice for family carers, representing and providing support to carers in Victoria. Carers Victoria have an advisory telephone line, they can provide NDIS advice and support, and they have a phone counselling service along with other support offerings.

Programs and Camps

Satellite Foundation:

Satellite Connect Youth:

A free online program for young people 14-17yrs who have a parent/carer with mental illness of mental health challenge. The Connect Youth program provides opportunities for young people to be herd and the power of their experiences to be shared through a supported 6 week program. 

Satellite Camps

Satellite Camps are three-day, overnight programs for young people 10–15yrs (approx). Satellite camps use a range of diverse indoor and outdoor activities to engage participants and to have fun! Team-building and adventure activities provide opportunities to work together, build camaraderie and create lasting memories.

Kookaburra Kids Foundation:

The Kookaburra Foundation supports kids in school grades 3 through to 12 living in families affected by mental illness. Kookaburra Kids Camps are free, and offer young carer kids both respite from their carer role, as well as the chance to participate in a range of fun activities, such as canoeing, archery, giant swings, go-karts and much more.

Financial help

Young Carers Carer Bursary

This is financial help to reduce your need to have a part-time job if you are studying or training and taking care of someone.

You might be able to get this payment if you are aged 12–25 years or under, in high school, or at university or TAFE.

Young carers across Australia can apply from late July until early September.

Centerlink Carer Allowance

Carer Allowance is a fortnightly payment for carers of all ages.
