Interview with Soren, drummer from Selling Time
Published on 07 March 2016
As you’ve probably heard, local band Selling Time battled it out at the FReeZA Push Start Battle of the Bands and won! The trio (Soren - drums, Harry - lead singer and bassist and Jack - guitar) will go on to represent Nillumbik at the finals in March at Moomba.
Soren had a quick chat with us about the band and what’s coming up for the North Warrandyte and Eltham boys.
1. How would you sum up Selling Time’s style of music?
Alternative rock, I guess. We are definitely highly inspired by 90's grunge and alternative rock music. However, recently we’re been having some crazy and psychedelic jazz jams. So I guess we’ll see where that might take us to…
2. Are there any challenges for you guys as young musicians?
There are heaps of challenges, we are always learning on the go. We’ve definitely had to make it up and create our own little community of bands. As we’ve had a couple of members come through the band, we have connections to lots of local bands. Even Jack and myself play in another band called Sideglance with Jack’s sister, Maxine. It’s a big world within a small one here. We all have to stick together and make it run, it’s just how it goes.
3. How did you hear about Battle of the Bands? What were your expectations?
Facebook is the biggest advertiser nowadays in a lot of ways so that’s where find out about gig opportunities. As we’ve been a band for around 3 years now, we’ve actually gotten the chance to play quite a lot of these type of events When we go to play these gigs, we expect a lot of entertaining surprises from the other acts really. There’s lots of talent out there, it’s great to see it showcased.
4. How are you feeling about your Northern Metro win and playing at Moomba next year?
It was an awesome feeling to win the Northern Metro section, but also a wonderful opportunity to play at Moomba. All three of us are really looking forward to showcasing what we have to offer to the larger audience of Moomba. With Jack nearly finished his year 12, we’ll get a chance to really kick into gear and make the most of what lays ahead.
5. What’s your dream gig, what venue and with whom?
I think we all wouldn’t mind playing a gig alongside Nirvana on the moon, live streamed to the whole world. Possible? I think so.
In the lead up to Moomba, Selling Time are rehearsing and recording. Stay tuned for an upcoming release by checking out their Facebook page and have a listen to their music on Triple J unearthed.
